During this time of great upheaval, women played a vital role in the fight for peace and justice. They worked as journalists, artists, and activists, and their contributions helped to shape the course of the war and its aftermath.
Here are the stories of just a few of these women:
Journalist May Chidiac
May Chidiac was a Lebanese journalist who worked for the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC). In 2005, she was the target of a car bombing that left her seriously injured. She lost her left arm and leg in the attack, but she did not give up her work.
After the bombing, Chidiac continued to work as a journalist, reporting on the war and its aftermath. She also became a vocal advocate for peace and justice.
Artist Mona Hatoum
Mona Hatoum is a Lebanese artist who is known for her work on themes of violence and displacement. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world.
During the Lebanese Civil War, Hatoum created a series of works that explored the impact of the war on women. These works included sculptures, installations, and videos.
Activist Nawal El Saadawi
Nawal El Saadawi is a Lebanese activist who is known for her work on women's rights and social justice. She has written over 50 books and articles on these topics.
During the Lebanese Civil War, El Saadawi worked with women from all sides of the conflict to promote peace and reconciliation. She also founded the Arab Women's Solidarity Association, which works to promote women's rights in the Arab world.
These are just a few of the many Lebanese women who fought for peace and justice during the Civil War. Their stories are a testament to the courage and resilience of women in the face of adversity.
