The first Jews arrived in the Iberian Peninsula during the Roman Empire, and they quickly established themselves as a vital part of society. They were involved in all aspects of life, from commerce to scholarship to government. In fact, some of the most famous Jews of the Middle Ages, such as Maimonides and Ibn Gabirol, were from Iberia.
However, the situation for Jews in Iberia began to deteriorate in the 13th century, as the Christian Reconquista gained momentum. The Reconquista was a series of wars fought between Christian kingdoms and Muslim kingdoms, and it eventually resulted in the expulsion of Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula. Jews were caught in the middle of this conflict, and they were often persecuted by both sides.
In 1492, the Spanish Inquisition was established, and this marked a new era of persecution for Jews in Iberia. The Inquisition was a religious tribunal that was charged with rooting out heresy, and it quickly turned its attention to Jews. Thousands of Jews were tortured, imprisoned, and burned at the stake. In 1497, all Jews were expelled from Portugal. In Spain, Jews were given the choice of converting to Christianity or facing expulsion. Many Jews chose to convert, but they continued to be persecuted by the Inquisition. Those that choose to be expelled are known as the Sephardim, and they established Jewish communities in various countries, such as the Netherlands, the Ottoman Empire and North Africa.
The expulsion of Jews from the Iberian Peninsula was a major event that had a profound impact on both Jewish and Iberian history. It led to the loss of a vibrant Jewish community, and it also contributed to the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe.
The history of Jews in Iberia is a complex and fascinating one. It is a story of faith, culture, and resilience that spans centuries. The Jews of Iberia have made a significant contribution to the development of both Jewish and Iberian culture, and their legacy continues to inspire and inform people around the world.
