Chapman was born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1970. He was a gifted athlete and a natural leader. After graduating from high school, Chapman attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1994 and was commissioned as an officer in the Army.
Chapman served in a variety of assignments, including stints in Korea, Germany, and the United States. In 2001, he was deployed to Afghanistan as a combat advisor. Chapman's mission was to work with Afghan forces to help them build a stable and secure country.
On March 4, 2002, Chapman was leading a patrol in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan when he was ambushed by Taliban fighters. Chapman was killed in the ensuing firefight. He was 31 years old.
Chapman's death was a tragedy, but his legacy lives on. The Nathan Chapman Foundation, which was established by Chapman's family and friends, provides support to the families of fallen service members. The foundation also works to raise awareness of the sacrifices made by our military men and women.
